5 Tips for Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop is a fabulous program containing tools for manipulating and enhancing pictures and graphics. Although the application is useful it can be complicated for some. Here are some tips you may find helpful even if you are a veteran Photoshop user.
Picture “pops out” of the frame
This is an easy task that can have dramatic effects. A portion of the picture will “pop out” of the original frame and look as though it has “popped” onto your screen.
Save a copy of the original picture and work on a second copy, just in case you make mistakes.
Use any selection tool to cut out only the portion of the image you wish to have “pop out”.
Lift the image by using the Float Command and duplicate it onto its own layer.
Create a new layer in the frame for the photo. You can use textures, borders or nothing at all.
Place a picture into text
Placing a picture into text is a simple job that creates a word using the picture. The picture will be placed into the text.
Select the image you want and place it in a new layer with a solid background.
Set the word you want using the type input method of choice. Use a style with a large area so much of your picture can be seen.
Select the type so you can move it around.
Click on the picture layer to edit the picture.
Use the Float Command to pick up the picture inside your text.
The selection will start a new layer and fill with a copy of the picture.
Turn off the original layer with the picture and your text will be filled with the picture.
Remove the white background from an image
Many images end up having a white background included in the frame. For example, a logo that may be used on different documents will often be surrounded by a white square. When placing it on a white page this is not a problem. However, placing it on a colored page will show the white square behind it. For a more professional look, follow these steps to remove the unwanted background.
Start a new layer and create an object of the same shape as your picture. The shape must replicate that of your picture and will be used like a cookie-cutter to place over the picture.
Make sure your shape layer is under the original picture layer in the Layer Palette.
Place the pointer over the line that divides these two layers in the Layer Palette while holding down the Alt/Option Key and click.
You have created a layer group. Choose Save As and select Photoshop EPS as the file format. Name the file. You are done.
NOTE: You may use Help and Export Transparent Image for an interactive wizard to help prepare images with transparency to be used in a page-layout application.
Make old photos look more vivid
Old photos can look dark or have a brown or gray color covering the entire image. Photoshop can help brighten and color these types of photos to make them vibrant and bring them closer to their original state.
Use Photo Filter from the Adjustment Layers area to choose color filters based on what your photo looks like.
Choose Color Balance from the Adjustment Layers area to adjust flesh and other tone levels for different elements in the photo.
Use Levels to balance the photo after the above changes are made.
Select an area with the Magic Wand to adjust from the Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer. You can repeat these steps as many times and in as many areas as necessary.
Adjust the Brightness/Contrast levels as your final adjustments to the photo.
Whiten teeth and eyes in Photoshop
There is no better way to make someone look fantastic than to whiten their teeth and eyes in a photo.
Create a new layer.
Select the Dodge tool.
Set the Range to Midtones on the Tool Options bar. The default Exposure is set at 50%. You may change this, but 50% is a good place to start.
Run the Dodge tool over the teeth and eyes to whiten. If you make a mistake or the results are too white, you can use Undo to reduce the Exposure level.
Zoom out frequently because the results often look different when viewing the entire image.

It’s the do-it-yourself graphic design handbook that makes marketing your business as easy as 1-2-3. There are some projects, though, where it pays to hire a graphic designer. When it’s time to hire a graphic designer, these 5 essential tips can save you a lot of time and money:
1) Figure out if you can do it yourself. If you are not a professional graphic designer, you could spend days – even weeks – to make a brochure or flyer that a professional designer could do in a matter of hours. For major projects that will be a big part of your marketing campaign, you’ll want to take advantage of the experience a graphic designer can offer. Once you find the right designer, you will have access to a consistent style of graphics for all your marketing pieces.
2) Check out their samples. Do you like what you see? If their portfolio includes the design elements that you are looking for, then you’ll know if their style is going to mesh with your style. And of course, you’ll want to see how their style will work for your type of product or service.
3) Get references. Your best place to start would be by asking friends and colleagues if they can recommend someone. Also, many graphic designers will include testimonials either on their website or correspondence. Don’t be shy to call… it’s why they’re there! You can also check with local printers. They usually know firsthand what the designers working style is. The website for the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA.com) has a free listing of designers all over the country.
4) Interview your prospective designer. Talk about the size and scope of the project, what your expectations are, and any deadlines you may have. You can get a sense of their work ethic, and see if you will work well together. This gives the designer the chance to ask you questions, too. You’ll know upfront if they have the time and skill to take on your project.
5) Get it in writing. Once you’ve found the right designer, make sure all the details are outlined in the proposal or contract. Get it in writing and make sure you know what it does (and doesn’t) include. Don’t forget to read any terms and conditions (such as a deposit) and make sure you’re comfortable with them before you start the project.

Adobe Photoshop Elements And The Smart Brush Tool
The Smart Brush tool in Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 combines the Quick Selection tool (Elements 6) and adjustment layers; it offers a quick way to adjust, enhance, and add effects to your photographs and is located in the Full Edit area of the Editor.
When you click on the Smart Brush a menu pops open showing nine categories of nearly 70 effects that can be applied to your photo. It\’s great because all you have to do is make your choice from the list and simply paint over the area you want the effect to be applied. After you begin drawing your initial selection the tool automatically switches to the Add to Selection mode. To remove any part of your selected area you can hold down Alt on your keyboard and paint away the parts you want to get rid of.
Just how does it work? If you take a look at the Layers palette, you\’ll see that an adjustment layer was created-in our example, a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer-along with the layer mask that accompanies adjustment layers. The area you selected is shown in white on the mask, thus revealing the effect. The black areas on the mask are hiding the effect.
To edit the effect, you can either double-click the adjustment layer in the Layers palette or you can double-click the red adjustment pin located in your selection on the image. As long as the adjustment layer is one supported by Adobe Elements, the dialog box for that adjustment layer will open and you can make any changes you wish.
Please take note that some of the presets were actually created using an adjustment layer included in the full version of Photoshop and not in Elements, so you won\’t be able to edit these effects.
