I’m showing one of my ways to removing the background on a picture..
In this method I have used the tools: Quickmask, Background Ereaser Tool..
[I'm using adobe photoshop CS3]

If you going through this kind of trouble why not just use the extract tool or the background erase too for the whole thing. It would seem a lot faster and easy to me
