How do you actually use a tool on Adobe Photoshop?

How do you actually use a tool on Adobe Photoshop?
I selected the tool, but I dont know how to apply it. Brush tool, specifically.

    Select it, choose the colour and brush you want to paint with. Click and drag to paint on the image.

    You can paint with the brush tool. Change the size of the tool by pressing the [ key to make it smaller and the ] to increase the size. In the options bar, the bottom menu bar, there is a drop down box for selecting different shapes, hardness and softness of the brush. There are many many shapes. You can use as a single click or click and hold to drag out the brush shapes.
